In the caption, Karan Johar wrote in a heartfelt note, “No amount of words can encapsulate the feelings for this film. K3G was an absolute honour solely because I had such a distinguished cast to direct on screen…and that soon became a family off-screen too. 21 years later, I’m still soaking in all the love it continues to give me & Dharma – whether it’s the music, the dialogues, the fashion or the emotions that rest with every family…THANK YOU! For making Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham what it was then and what it is today. After all, it’s all about loving your family.”

Summary of Movie:

Yashvardhan “Yash” Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a prosperous business tycoon who lives in Delhi with his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) and two sons, Rahul and Rohan. Rahul is the eldest son and was adopted at birth by Yash and Nandini. This is known to everyone in Raichand’s house except Rohan. Raichand’s household follows traditions. Growing up, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) meets the vivacious Anjali Sharma (Kajol) and they eventually fall in love. But their love is refused, as Anjali is from a low-income background. Yash and Nandini soon send Rohan (Kavish Majumdar) to boarding school which all the men in their family have done. Yash announces to Rahul his desire to marry Naina (Rani Mukerji). But Naina learns that Rahul is in love with Anjali and encourages her to go to him. When Yash comes to know about this, he is furious. Rahul promises not to marry Anjali. On his way to tell his promise, he finds out that his father (Alok Nath) has died and decides to marry her despite his father’s disapproval. Yash learns about the marriage and disowns Rahul. Nandini sends Saida (Farida Jalal) (Rahul and Rohan’s babysitter) with them so that she is not separated from her motherly love. Rahul meets Rohan at the boarding school and refuses to ask Rohan where he has gone or why and asks him to take care of Nandini.

Ten years later, Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) returns home from boarding school and overhears his grandmother and grandmother’s (Achala Sachdev and Sushma Seth) conversation regarding Rahul’s adoption. Also he knows why Rahul left the house. Rohan promises to reunite the family. He learns that Rahul, Anjali and her younger sister Pooja (with whom he shared a playful relationship during their childhood) have moved to London. He tells his parents that he wishes to pursue further studies in London. In London, Rahul and Anjali now have their son, Krishna (Jibrayan Khan). Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), now a popular fashion-obsessed young woman, is a student at King’s College London, where Rohan enrolls. He and Pooja meet again and he tells her that he has come to London to take his brother and sister-in-law back home. Pooja tells Rahul that Rohan is her friend’s brother, who currently has no place to live. Just before Krishna is to attend a school function, Saida and Anjali learn his true identity, though they promise to keep quiet. At Krishna’s school function, Krishna leads his class in singing Jana Gana Mana and later recites Rohan’s advice. Rahul had given this advice to Rohan ten years back. Now he realizes that Rohan is his brother. Also, Rohan and Pooja fall in love.

Rohan urges Rahul to come home, but Rahul refuses. Pooja convinces Rohan to invite her parents to London. Rahul and Nandini are overjoyed to see each other, but Rahul still refuses to talk to his father. Yash soon learns that his mother had died and her last wish was for Yash, Rahul and Rohan to light her funeral pyre together. Therefore, the whole family participates in the last rites. Nandini tells Yash that she feels she did wrong by rejecting Rahul. Rohan and Pooja persuade Rahul to talk to Yash, who apologizes and allows Rahul and Anjali into the house. Rohan and Pooja are married and the family celebrates Rahul and Anjali’s wedding.
